Ginny's breath fogged before her in the chilly October air as she made her way across the lawns, well wrapped up in her winter cloak. Early in the morning, as it was now, it was easy to tell that autumn was on its way, and that winter was following close on its heels. Soon, the redhead could tell, she was going to have to start digging out more of her winter clothes from the trunk which she kept under her bed. It was a shame, really, but then the castle always looked so pretty in the snow that she didn't have the heart to complain too loudly about the bitter cold. Scottish winters were hardly noted for their mildness, after all, and the slim witch was not designed to cope with them in the slightest. Hot chocolate and thick sweaters were the answer, she supposed, although she could hardly get away with that while teaching. At least her classroom was always quite warm, which she suspected had something to do with the many hours that she had spent asleep on her desk as a student... that and Professor Binns, of course, who had managed to make even the most thrilling of battles seem desperately dull. In fact, she attributed her current position entirely to him- after he'd left, no one else had wanted the job.
She tried to come down here at least once a week. Granted, there was no chance that she would ever forget that dreadful battle, but equally, she wanted to set time aside to remember those that she had lost. Those that others had lost; those bright young sparks which had been extinguished forever.

It wasn't easy being a half giant. He was only 14 yet he was already about the size of a normal adult male. He stuck out in crowds like a sore thumb, even with his red Weasley like hair. He wasn't dressed very warmly, although his rushed breath and sweaty brow would do more than enough to explain to others simply what he had been doing out on an October morning dressed in athletic wear.
As he came near to the end of his morning run he saw a sole figure by the memorial upon the lawns. At first in the foggy morning air he thought it was a student, but as he drew nearer it became clear that he was awkwardly and embarassingly wrong. At that point however it was too late for him to slip away unnoticed.
"Morning professor... are you okay?"

Ginny's life had never been simple and it had certainly never been ordinary. She had first met Harry Potter aged ten, which her obsessed younger self had considered to be the high point of her lifetime. Her older self disagreed, of course; aside from anything else, she had met Harry quite a number of times since then; heck, she'd married him! And then of course her first year had been far from uneventful; she'd been possessed by Tom Riddle and locked in a hidden chamber under the school which no one even thought existed. So yes, the youngest Weasley child had had an exciting life. But she hoped that it was over now, that she could settle down to life in a pleasant job and watch her children grow up around her. That was the hope. Umbridge, of course, had not been foreseen. It should have been Hermione.
She looked around at the sound of a student's voice... and then she looked up. "Good morning." she responded brightly. "I'm well, thank you, and yourself?"

The one thing with being young was the fact that you could never really tell when you were being lied to by an authority figure. Professor Potter may not have been his mother, but she did have a good poker face, so there was no way that Talon could tell that she was mourning the loss of friends and possibly family based upon her cheery appearance and tone. “I’m okay… just getting in a run before classes today…”He ran a hand through his sweaty hair and swiped away the sweat upon his brow. "Are you sure you're okay professor?"

Ginny had always been good at detecting the emotions of others; it was, she had a dark suspicion, something which she had inherited from her own mother, who had seemed to have a sixth sense for when one was feeling down. It had driven Ginny mad as a child, and now she had no doubt that she was doing the same for her own children. Revenge.
And a side effect of this particular talent was some innate ability to disguise her own emotions from those who were less gifted, which meant that she was somewhat surprised at this particular student's persistence in questioning her. "Yes, thank you." Ginny insisted gently, steering the conversation onto a different topic. "Do you run a lot?"

There was an unease in her voice. One that told him that he should stop. He should have known better. No adult would openly admit their feelings to a child, regardless of race. Next time he would know not to ask. He readily allowed her to change the topic though. "I run every day to try and stay in shape. Figured it wouldn't be a bad idea given what happened during the summer..."

It was not simply that Ginny was opposed to admitting her current emotional state to someone considerably younger than her, although there was certainly an element of that. But she was opposed to admitting her current emotional state to anyone at all. Not only was she a Gryffindor, she was Head of Gryffindor House, and to admit that she was falling apart a little would not be a Gryffindor thing to do at all.
She nodded at the boy's explanation. "A good idea." she commented. "One should always be prepared for the worst, so that the best comes as a pleasant surprise."
