To be honest Graham was rather nervous for this day. He had no idea how much the students had heard of him or how they were going to react. It was not something he was going to bring up. Everything in this classroom should be strictly professional. He’d leave his past outside the door. Hopefully the students could do so too.
He waited for the students to gather. He made sure the students were seated by year. When the bell rang, he closed the door and started. Anyone who was late would have to knock. “Good morning everyone, I hope you had a pleasant easter break,” he greeted the students with a polite nod. “I am Professor Avery and starting today I’ll be your potions teacher. If you ever have trouble or want some extra information. Do not feel too afraid to approach. When the classroom door is open, I’ll be present and you’re welcome to ask whatever class related bothers you,” he left the introduction at that. “Now, let’s get started. We don’t have all day.”
“The first second and third years will be making a basic sleeping draught. The recipe can be found in Magical Drafts and Potion. The fourth and fifth years will make a draught of peace and the sixth and seventh years will make a Wiggenweld Potion. All the ingredients you need are in my cabin,” he said as he signed towards the big storage at the back of the room. “You’ll work in pairs. I want each pair to write down what the potion does, the appearance and it’s possible dangers or side effects. When you hand it in, you can collect your ingredients. Show those to me before you start. Now you have five minutes to form pairs. Those without pairs will be matched at random by me.” Graham liked getting straight to the point. He hoped everything was clear enough for the students.
Note: all information on the potions can be found on the potter wiki.

Kallisto knew her father would be her teacher starting today. She’d only seen him once when he arrived and there he told her that he was here to be a teacher, not her father. But after school hours, she was welcome for some tea. Kalli considered going once a week. She loved her father but didn’t want her friends to think she was a daddy’s girl. Father did look better than Mimi described him as the past months. She was glad, her father needed this, a purpose. Now she sat in class, she did feel a little odd. Because after her father had introduced himself, she could hear people around her. ‘Is that Alice’s dad? The one from the newspaper?’ People often called Kallisto by her second name, which she didn’t mind. Her first name was ridiculous and given by her grandparents. “He is, so what? Here he is just our teacher,” she quickly told the whispering students to get it over with.

Alba Shacklebolt thought it was a bit bizarre to be learning potions from the man who had been one of the most prominent figures in her father's ministry. She also felt terrible about it. This man had been forced from a job he'd worked so hard to get, he'd struggled to regain trust after he was forced to work with Lord Voldemort under the imperious Curse. He'd lost so much and then Fenrir Greyback had taken his humanity and Delores Umbridge had taken his career. Alba was a skilled potioneer, and as soon as the introduction had ended, she began to collect ingredients, Alba suspected a partner would find her. She wasn't un-popular and following her O in potions in her O.W.L.s, she'd been sought after as a partner for these sorts of exercises for quite a while. Depositing her retrieved ingredients down, she didn't sit and wait, she chose instead to approach Professor Avery.
"Excuse me, Professor." the dark skinned girl breathed quietly - trying to keep her voice low enough that the rest of the class wouldn't be distracted by it as they went for ingredients. "I just want to say that I'm sorry. My father always talked about how much he'd come to trust and respect you. I just want you to know that not everyone believes you're a traitor." She shot the professor a caring look and sighed. She didn't have time for this conversation if she wanted to get the potion done. "Good luck with your new career, professor Avery." She said respectfully as she turned to return to her work. Beginning to prepare the potion and waiting for some less organised sixth or seventh year to approach her.

Ah potions, boring but necessary if he had to believe his uncle. Being good at potions, poisons and antidotes added to your survival chances. So he went with it. It seemed they had a new teacher. Dio knew this one, he had heard many about him. Who hadn't he was all over the newspapers not only recently but in the past too. He wasn't sure how he was supposed to feel about this. Why would a werewolf willingly fight with the wizards and against the werewolves? What was there to gain in that? Dio added this new Professor to his list. Sooner or later everyone had their turn. He rose his eyebrow when some Ravenclaw chick started to shower love and faith over their new teacher. Disgusting. "Please, Shacklebolt. He is a traitor of his own kind. Anyone who willingly works for Minister Umbitch is evil. Besides all politicians are corrupted. They don't care about the common people," he told her loudly so the entire class would hear. Her own father had been minister of magic once. No doubt she felt better than everyone else. But how would she fare in his survival courses? Hm... Another name on the list. alba shacklebolt

Alba groaned audibly at the words of the Slytherin male. She wasn't in the mood to hear it. She had tried to extend a display of faith and trust to the new professor, because he was a man who deserved his dignity, and he had lost so much of it. And yet here was this stupid boy running him down. Alba shot a quick look at Kallie, imploring her to stay out of it but knowing it was probably useless. She didn't want the younger student to put herself at risk because of some idiot's irrelevant and half-formed opinion.
"Oh would you shut up Greyback?" She huffed wheeling around on the student. "If my father was a child-abducting war criminal, I wouldn't be throwing stones." Alba wasn't going to put up with this too easily. She moved a little closer to Dio. "And in case you didn't notice, Umbridge fired Professor Avery. His being a werewolf is pretty clearly a convenient excuse to clear out the officials who were loyal to my father, and would have stood behind Hermione Granger." Alba was in full stream now.
"Besides, your father worked with snatchers, and who oversaw the trials of the muggleborns he captured? Delores Umbridge." Alba looked mutinous at this point, ready to defend the professor. She knew he didn't need it, that his skin was thicker than that, but Alba had a notion of loyalty, that her father had instilled in her.

Graham noticed some confused and doubtful gazes within the class. That was to be expected, he supposed. This could've gone worse. Nobody had starting yelling yet. He choose not to look into his daughter's direction, trusting her to be strong enough to handle things herself. He checked his watch, they had about four minutes left on pair picking.
The professor blinked when a seventh year student spoke up. He knew her from the pictures Minister Shacklebolt once showed proudly. Although she was a bit older now. For a moment he watched a scene unfold in front of him as a Slytherin boy respond to Miss. Shacklebolt. He’d expected something like this to happen however now it happened he didn’t know how to dim the situation.
Accusations were thrown, it took Graham a moment to think of what to say. “Children, behave,” he told the bickering duo. “I will request everyone leaves their political views out of this classroom. Save it for History of Magic, we’re here to study potions. You might not like me, Mr. Greyback. But in business you’ll always have to work with people whom you don’t like. Let this be a lesson for the future,” he eyed the boy and then quickly his own daughter as he saw she was pulling her mouth open. Finally he gave Miss. Shacklebolt a nod and small smile. He could handle himself but it was good knowing some people still believed in him. “Has anyone assembled their partners? You have three minutes left.”

Dio glared at Shacklebolt as she started pulling his father into this. Humans were keen on talking his father down, they just didn’t know better. “He made them stronger and gave them a better life and a purpose,” he said knowing it was no use. It was not like anyone would just side with him. They were all sheep, afraid of the wolves who would slaughter them all. One either became a wolf or died among the rest of the sheep. “We’ll see who a war criminal is when we’ve won,” he grinned proudly. The Slytherin shook his head. “I just don’t get why a werewolf willingly works for someone who wants them all gone.” It’d never make sense to him. He rose his eyebrow when Shacklebolt pointed out about the snatchers. “They had no choice, they were following the dark lord’s orders. It’s not like they were happy about it. Even the dark lord treated them like trash. It’s good that they stand up for themselves now,” he said with a nod. Then the ‘Professor’ made them shut up. Dio gave the man a look, daring him. “Tsk,” he rolled his eyes at the man. They only had a few minutes to find partners. Dio wasn’t going to risk being paired up with Shackledull. So he quickly searched for someone who wasn’t stupid. Ah! rodney larue. Dio walked over to the Gryffindor and wrapped his arm around him. “You’ll be my partner today, ” he grinned and was already forgotten about today’s argument. “Let’s see if those smooth hands of yours are good at anything besides piano and love making,” he winked. Note: I hope you’re alright with adding him in just like this

What the hell was this Greyback kid thinking?! Kallisto stood up to walk over and smack him in the face but Alba spoke up to him before she could. The young Ravenclaw sat down again and bit her lip. She didn't like it when people were saying negative things about her father. Of course she knew he had plenty of enemies but to hear it from her classmates hurt. Kallie was sure her dad was a good man. He always worked hard and sacrificed so much for her sake. Sometimes she felt guilty for it all.
Alba was amazing, speaking up to that jerk like that without losing her cool. Kallie aspired to be like her one day. "Thank you," she whispered softly. Alba probably couldn't even hear her so she told her self to thank the older Claw after class.
Her father took control of the lesson again and Kallie looked around for a labpartner. Alba was too old to be able to work with her so she had to settle for someone else.

To be perfectly honest Tierney didn't know what to do in this situation. Class had only just begun and they already had an argument on their hands... in fact the whole situation had him rolling his eyes. Yes, they were all different, but couldn't they all just put them aside and get along for at least an hour? While the professor stepped in to try and resolve the issue he began to look around the room in search of a partner. Would anyone want to work with this snake?

Melle turned awfully pale as his half brother created a scene. Thank Merlin only a few people knew that he was a Greyback himself. He'd promised his adoptive parents to keep himself completely separated from his biological family. The little Slytherin wanted to be accepted by the people who took him in. He still had to regain their trust after the incident where he let his biological father in and turn him. Back then Melle was only a small kid who didn't know better. He had been happy to see his real father again. But now he understood he was a bad man and he wanted to convince the Marquardt he was on the human side now. Each time when werewolves were mentioned, Melle felt uncomfortable. His own status as one had to stay hidden at all costs. He was glad the drama died off. Time for glass time for normal things. He looked around for a partner and eventually noted a third year of his house. "Mister Brennan, would you like to work together for this class?" He didn't mind working with someone younger. If anything it meant he could help the other had he trouble with this topic. tag: tierney brennan
