James never looked forward to the beginning of the school year, but this year seemed to be the worst. By the time the first day ended, he wished the year was over. There was so much homework that he didn’t have much time to actually pull his pranks. Even the Transfiguration and Astronomy essays were difficult for him to finish. It was his fifth year, though, so he couldn’t expect much else. OWLs were approaching, though a lot slower than some of the professors seemed to think, and from the stories he’d been told, they could be pretty traumatizing. He wasn’t going to let that get him down, though. He had plans and he certainly wasn't going to let anything stand in his way.

James had decided that this was the year he would finally become an animagus. He was still working had at it, even during the summer when he couldn’t do magic, he read as much as he possibly could on the subject. The few times he was able to slip away and practice since school had been back in session, which were very few, he felt like he was getting closer. James could be wrong, but he felt like it was only a matter of time now. He just needed more time to practice. Currently, he was on the seventh floor, tying up some water balloons. It might seem childish, but it was certainly going to be funny when they fell on someone.

Once he was done, he ran down the hall, making sure he was close enough to see it go off while also staying out of sight just in case he was seen by someone. He didn’t want someone who knew his reputation to avoid his trap.

Matéo was dressed from head to toe within his school uniform, his wand tucked away within the folds of his school cloak. It was still a little hard to believe that he finally owned one but that wasn't what he was focusing on at this very moment. No, at this very moment he was simply trying to figure out how to get back to a part of the castle that he knew.

At this very moment he was lost.

He had no clue where he was, or even that he had wandered into the path of James' prank.

James grinned when he saw the kid approach. He didn’t pay much attention to the sorting anymore; merely clapped whenever the other Gryffindors did, but this kid looked like a first year. That was even better than getting the older students; they tended to have funnier reactions. He watched intently as the Hufflepuff drew closer, really hoping that he didn’t notice the balloons or that he didn’t just decide to turn around and go another way. James would have to wait for someone else to approach then and who really knew when someone else would come down this way?

“Come on, come on, come on,” he mouthed, impatiently, really hoping the kid set off his prank. He couldn’t wait to see him get drenched.

It was never a question of if he would walk straight into the prank... it was a question of if James would allow his young cousin to do so. They were family after all, and some family members wouldn't allow others to walk blindly into a trap... but apparently that wasn't the case with James.

One step...

Two steps...

Three...

As he took that final step he was bombarded by a hoard of water balloons which burst upon impact, leaving the unsuspecting first year drenched where he stood. Shock clearly etched upon his young features. His blonde hair now looked darker than it should of been and stuck to his head in a flat lump... unable to hold the added weight.

"What the hell?!"

As the kid drew closer, he realized who it was and while he could’ve stopped it, there was no reason to ruin a perfectly good prank. James pranked all of his family members since they were his main targets during the summer and family get-togethers. This would probably land him in trouble with Fleur and Gabrielle because he should probably be looking after Mateo, not pranking him, but it wasn’t his fault the kid walked right into his prank.

James laughed as the balloons burst on him and came out from his hiding spot. “Oh, that was great,” he said. “Some advice, always watch where you’re going at Hogwarts. Little pranks like these can turn up anywhere, generally harmless, though. I can even dry you off if you’d like. I promise not to hex you.” James was still smiling, though, and didn’t look trustworthy. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a biscuit. “Here, want a biscuit? A little treat for being my first victim of the year. Gran made them, so you know they’re good. I wouldn’t tamper with her food.” It was a Canary Cream from Uncle George’s shop. He wasn’t really sure if this would work because it was possible Mateo would recognize it. He had to at least try, though.

As a slight breeze rolled through the corridor a shiver rolled through his spine, once the sound of laughter caught his attention though he turned to see who it was, the curiosity he felt having been triggered by a feeling of familiarity. He swore he had heard that loaugh before, he just couldn't pin a name to the sound... that is until he glimpsed the black hair.

As he looked toward his cousin, his left fist curled into a ball.

Did James think that this little speech would get him to trust the Potter boy again? Did he really think he was going to give him another opportunity to prank him again in less than 5 minutes from the last prank?

"How am I meant to trust you after what you just did?!"

Was he a little angry? Sure. Was he cold? A little bit. But he wasn't dumb no matter what people though Hufflepuffs were!

James put the canary cream back in his pocket with a shrug. “Suit yourself,” he said. “More for me.” He was going to turn away and head out, but he considered the first year. This little prank of his touched a nerve and if it had been anyone else, he would’ve gotten mad right back and stormed off, focusing his next pranks on strictly him, but Mateo was family. “It was a prank,” he said. “Completely harmless. That’s par for the course here at Hogwarts. Me and the Marauders aren’t the only pranksters in this school. Learn to take a joke and laugh it off. It’s just a way for us to have fun at this place. It’s going to be very hard for you to last seven years here, which, believe me, go very slowly, if you get mad at small pranks.”

That was all he was going to say on the matter. James had considered promising not to prank him again, but he couldn’t do that. He had no way of knowing whether Mateo would get caught up in another of his pranks or not. He headed down the corridor, thinking about his next prank.
