Louis had received a rather startling surprise when he had gotten his Hogwarts letter. He had not been expecting it but a shiny prefect badge had fallen out among its contents along with a prefect welcome letter. Yada yada. His parents were over the moon whilst Louis was a little in shock. Was he that good at hiding his shenanigans? It would seem so.

Or maybe the staff thought he would be able to reign in James? That was a laugh and a half. Dropping by James's place, he waited for his cousin, still kind of laughing to himself. What a turn of events!

James didn’t pay much attention to the owl that flew in with his supplies list. He opened it, glanced at the list, then threw it aside. There was no reason for him to pay much attention to it since it was pretty much the same as what he’d gotten the last four years, though the books were a little different. James was too busy planning his back to school shenanigans to care about that at the moment. He didn’t have everything yet; the puking pastilles and canary creams would be picked up when he did his back to school shopping.

There was still one other thing he needed that unfortunately wasn’t sold in Diagon Alley, so it would be a little harder to get his hands on. When he heard Lou was there, he ran out, stood at the top of the stairs and said, “Come on up here, Lou, I need your help with homework.”

Louis wondered if anyone actually believed that they would be working on homework as he climbed the stairs. Especially since it was the summer holidays which meant tons of time to get the summer readings done. “Sure thing, James,” he said anyway.

“You’ll never believe this but I’m a prefect,” Louis said once he had reached James and was out of earshot of their relatives. “That will make things so much easier for us.” Oh, he’d do prefect things and probably bust people that dared to try and outprank them.

James was aware it wasn’t all that likely he was tricking anyone by saying that, but it was all he could think of at the moment. Honestly, he was sure he could’ve said anything and it wouldn’t have been believed. All he had to do was hope that everyone around was too preoccupied with something else to care about what they were up to.

He sat back on his bed and didn’t look up until he heard his cousin’s news. “Oh, Lou, I’m so sorry,” he said, sounding horrified, as if it was the worst thing ever. “I should’ve gotten you involved in more detentions.” James could see the good in it, though. Having a prefect on your side meant less time getting into trouble. “It could be useful, as long as you don’t turn on me and decide breaking a rule is a terrible thing.” He was joking, of course. If he could trust anyone to not turn all responsible on him, it was Lou. “Anyway, any ideas where I can get a niffler?”
