Gunther had probably the smallest class of students. Many still frowned down upon the thought of being taught in Dark Arts. People were still uncomfortable with the thought. Even if Hogwarts has been teaching it for a while now. The German Professor has been teaching here since 2014 and before him there had been others. They might be a small class but each student was perfect. Gunther rather had a few enthusiastic and serious students than children who just went to his class because they had to. He'd prepared a practical class today which hopefully still was alright with the school rules. Every student had a dead mouse chained up on their table. When every student sat down, Gunther greeted them all with a charming grin. "Guten Morgen jedermann. Today's class might not be for the faint hearted among us so I'm giving you the chance to leave without any consequences. In return I just need a small essay on the topic we're going through today: Necromancy. Perhaps among the most obscure yet unsuccessful practices. Does anyone know why the practice of necromancy is considered a branch of magic that has never worked?" tag: john boone , song hanuel , @dio , seok-jin choi , mitchell atwater , annie le beau , alba shacklebolt

Alba Shacklebolt's father had been an auror before he became Minister. He had fought dark wizards, she had no doubt he had battled those who would raise inferi. Alba had originally decided, a long time ago that she would take Dark Arts as a study into the subject, in hopes of learning to better understand the mentality of dark wizards. She would have loved to follow in her father's footsteps, though that would have to wait until Delores Umbridge was no longer in office, if it was ever going to happen at all. That didn't mean, however that the subject didn't hold appeal to her. It was very interesting. Alba herself would never create an inferius, in any circumstance she could forsee. At least not for anything other than the purpose of educating herself in such dark matters, but she wanted to know how it worked, she wanted a strong understanding.
Alba sat, wand, quill, ink well, text book and note book arrayed before her, she didn't even move as the offer to be excused without consequence was given. She had no doubt that several of the students there would leave and indeed at least one did, grimacing at the notion of raising the dead. Alba was grateful for the option to leave for those who may have had less fortitudee than curiousity, but she wasn't about to back down, herself
"Because, Professor." Alba moved to answer the question. "The dead cannot be returned to true life through any magic yet discovered - however that's not to say that the dead can't be animated, and in that respect Necromancy does indeed work." She said succinctly. "Given the numerous uses of Inferi, it isn't realistic to say that the only goal of necromancy is to truly resurrect the dead."
Note: The student who left is annie le beau I play like half the class and I thought it would get a bit much if they were all here.

To be fair, there was one reason, and one reason only as to why Mitchell had signed up for this class. His parents (having been Death Eaters during the war) had been trying to raise him to hold the Death Eater ideals which of course meant peer pressuring him to the point where he had to send an owl to Professor Mcgonagall prior to his third year at Hogwarts and request that he change one of his options to Dark Arts. To be perfectly honest, this wasn't one of his favorite classes, but that didn't mean that he wouldn't pay attention to what was going on in the lesson. School mattered to him after all, even if he liked girls more than he did homework. He watched as one girl got up and left, but made no moves to leave himself. If his parents ever found out that he had left then he would be in for a world of pain this summer. Instead he began to write notes, sticking his own hand up to add to Alba's point... speaking once indicated to do so. "Death is kind of like a Dementor's kiss. When you die, your soul is kind of destroyed and no matter how hard we try nothing could replace a soul. The soul is what makes us... us... so although your body may be alive its more of a robot than a human being."

Gunther gave the girl who left a small nod, acknowledging her departure. He was satisfied with his own decision to allow students to leave this one class. It might be a little more on a sensitive area than the other ones. Life and death were always ambiguous and unclear topics. A Ravenclaw answered his question first. "You are correct Miss. Shacklebolt. Ten points to Ravenclaw," he replied with a nod. "There are many people who have attempted to create an army of inferi, the famous dark wizard Lord Voldemort for example. He used them to guard one of his horcruxes." That would be a topic for another day, a mere theoretical lesson. Because whilst he could let the students create inferi mice, having them create horcruxes was a rather bad idea. A Hufflepuff student added to the answer and this too was truth. "Very true, Mr. Atwater you earn Hufflepuff ten points. Until now there hasn't been any magic which can pull back the soul from the netherworld. Or so they say. There is one item that can do so. The resurrection stone which currently is resumed missing or destroyed some still believe it's a fable. But even stories about the people who were brought back through this weren't joyful. They were still not truly alive, something between ghosts and humans. Not a pleasant fate. Spare your loved ones from this," he said with a small smile. The young Professor turned towards the class. "In front of you are the mice the Hogwarts cats caught and brought to me. Today we'll reanimate them so you see what happens to a body. This branch of magic is forbidden to use on human corpses. So keep that in mind," he told the class tags: alba shacklebolt mitchell atwater
